The Friends Program serves elementary students from Kearney, Ravenna, Pleasanton, Elm Creek, and Sumner-Eddyville-Miller who are in need of friendship/mentorship. The child "Little Friend" is paired with an adult volunteer "Big Friend". The two engage in weekly educational or recreational activities in the community, while the Big Friend encourages building positive relationships, reading skills, violence prevention, and drug and alcohol prevention. The Friends Program has a direct impact on 78 Kearney youth and 83 indiviudals in rural schools for a total of 161 youth. Since its inception in 1978, the program has impacted more than 2,500 children.
