Community Impact Grant-CDL Classes
United Way of the Kearney Area has dedicated $10,000 in 2013 for Community Impact Grants that improve our community through the areas of Education, Income, and Health. Organizations within Buffalo, Kearney, Phelps, Harlan, Franklin or Custer counties are eligible to apply for the funding.
The 2013 recipient was the Job Skills Impact Grant; the goal was to incrase the income of working families through offering assistance toward earning a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Individuals were carefully selected to go through the program by staff at Community Action Partnership of Mid-Nebraska. From there, they were enrolled into the CDL course at the Nebraska Safety Center at UNK. Fees to take the course are $2,500 plus about $60 for the license, making this an unattainable goal for many families due to financial constraints.
To date, four students have been enrolled and completed the program. One particular gentleman, John, really excelled in his CDL course. He had six children at home, so it was very important for him to obtain a job where he could have the potential to move up. With the assistance of the UWKA Community Impact Grant funds to pay for the course fees, he was able to complete the class in less than two months and obtained a full time local job. After a couple months of being employed, he wanted to grow his education even more by earning an extra certification that could increase his income. Community Action was able to help cover the fees for this certification as well.
After taking all the courses and starting his new full-time career in truck driving, John went from his previous job making $8 an hour to over $15 an hour, thanks to this great partnership!
